AI-proctored online assessment tools in India: a hiring team’s buying guide

Understand what AI actually does, choose the right monitoring setup and test the complete hiring workflow before buying.

What does “AI online assessment platform for hiring” actually mean?

The phrase can describe several different products. One platform may use AI to suggest questions; another may analyse monitoring signals; another may help assess written work. Those functions solve different problems. Start by naming the decision you need help with: selecting questions, administering a test, reviewing assessment activity or comparing job-related evidence.

For example, a recruitment team hiring sales associates may need numerical reasoning, written communication and a manageable report review. A software team may need candidates to execute code. Adding the same AI label to both workflows does not make the assessment evidence interchangeable.

Separate the AI claim from the hiring task
Claim you hearWhat to ask the vendor to show
AI-generated assessmentsHow a recruiter checks question accuracy, job relevance and the answer key before publication.
AI proctoringThe recorded event, its timestamp and the evidence available to the reviewer.
AI scoringWhat is scored, what the scoring criteria are and how a reviewer handles a disputed result.
AI candidate matchingThe inputs and job requirements behind a recommendation, and who makes the final decision.

How is AI proctoring different from live or recorded proctoring?

Automated monitoring flags activity for attention. Live proctoring adds a person who monitors candidates during the assessment. Recorded review lets a reviewer examine captured evidence afterwards. A vendor may combine these approaches, so specify who reviews events and when the review happens.

Mercer | Mettl’s official proctoring documentation, for example, separately describes automated monitoring, human supervision and record-and-review options. That illustrates why “proctored” alone is not a complete specification. Ask which of the demonstrated controls are actually included in your proposed package.

A tab-change record describes browser activity. A webcam event describes what the configured camera system observed. Neither, by itself, explains why the event happened. An assessment score and an integrity-review decision should be recorded separately.

What can hiring teams review in AssessEngine?

AssessEngine’s published proctoring workflow shows ID photos, webcam snapshots and tab-change records, with activity marked Clear, Review or Violations. The hiring team reviews the evidence and makes the shortlisting decision. Its assessment features include question setup, candidate access and section-level results.

Use a walkthrough to examine the monitoring configuration for your assessment. Confirm the event types, retained evidence and review process you need. Do not assume that webcam monitoring establishes emotion recognition, detection of every external AI tool, continuous screen recording or autonomous hiring decisions.

This guide does not establish those additional AI capabilities for AssessEngine. If a particular AI function is essential to your procurement brief, request a demonstration and written confirmation before treating it as a requirement the platform meets.

What should an Indian employer put in a proctored-assessment brief?

Describe the role, expected attempts, peak simultaneous participation, duration and locations. These are different quantities: 1,000 invited candidates do not necessarily mean 1,000 candidates online at the same instant. Include the assessment window in IST and any other time zones your candidates use.

For remote participation, confirm the device and browser combination with the controls enabled. A platform’s general mobile access does not prove that every proctoring configuration works on every phone. Ask how candidates check access before the timed stage and who handles issues during the actual test window.

  • List the sections and scoring rules your hiring team will use.
  • Specify enabled monitoring, permitted materials and the explanation candidates receive.
  • Agree who reviews flags, who can approve exceptions and how decisions are recorded.
  • Ask where assessment records are stored, who can access them and how retention and deletion requests are handled.
  • Include support hours, escalation contacts, payment terms and GST treatment in the written proposal.

How can recruiters test an AI-proctored assessment tool before buying?

Use an approved internal pilot rather than your first live applicant round. The following is a fictional pilot design, not a claim about measured platform accuracy. Give each vendor the same brief and record the configuration used.

  • Use only test accounts and non-sensitive sample responses.
  • Run checks with the vendor’s permission; avoid exposing live assessment questions.
  • Record access failures, ambiguous instructions and time needed for review.
  • Resolve material gaps before inviting applicants; a small pilot is not a statistical accuracy study.

Pilot checkWhat to record
Normal attemptCan the participant start, finish and appear correctly in the recruiter report?
Permitted tab changeWas the agreed rule applied and is the event understandable?
Brief camera interruptionWhat evidence is retained, what message appears and what does support advise?
Authorised access adjustmentCan the agreed arrangement be communicated and administered consistently?
Recruiter handoverCan a second reviewer understand the result and the recorded decision?

How much does a proctored online assessment cost?

Separate assessment delivery from monitoring, custom content and operational support. AssessEngine’s published standard objective rate is ₹80 plus GST per candidate attempt without web proctoring. Proctoring is quoted separately. Do not present the standard rate as an AI-proctored package price.

Fictional budgeting example: 300 standard objective attempts at that published rate equal ₹24,000 before GST, proctoring or other separately quoted services. A proctored proposal must state those additional charges before the total can be compared with another vendor. Ask what consumes an attempt and how approved retries affect billing.

AssessEngine also accepts requests for a one-time 10-attempt standard objective evaluation, subject to activation and the published terms. It excludes proctoring. Use it to inspect the standard assessment and reporting workflow; arrange a separate discussion if the decision depends on proctoring.

Which tool should your team choose?

Choose the provider that demonstrates your required assessment and review workflow at an acceptable total cost. A missing essential control matters more than a long list of unrelated AI features. If your requirement is live human supervision, make the staffing and coverage explicit. If it is recruiter review of recorded activity, test the handover and evidence quality.

Use the downloadable checklist to document the result of each demo. Once you choose, send candidates instructions that match the configuration, complete an approved pilot and assign a reviewer before launch. For how to interpret individual events after a test, use the separate proctoring-flags guide linked below.

Common questions

What is the best AI-proctored online assessment tool in India?

The best fit depends on your role, assessment formats, monitoring requirements, reviewer workflow and budget. Compare a demonstrated configuration against the same written brief rather than choosing from an AI label or an unsupported ranking.

Can AI proctoring detect every case of cheating or ChatGPT use?

Do not assume complete detection. Ask what signals the tool records, its documented limitations and what evidence a reviewer can inspect. A flag should be evaluated in context rather than treated as proof on its own.

Is an AI assessment platform the same as AI proctoring software?

No. AI may be used for question suggestions, scoring, matching or monitoring. Ask which function is provided and whether it is included in the proposed assessment setup.

Does AssessEngine automatically reject candidates flagged by proctoring?

Its published workflow presents assessment activity for recruiter review. The hiring team decides what action is appropriate; an activity mark does not itself make the shortlisting decision.

Can we try AssessEngine proctoring with the 10 free attempts?

The published one-time 10-attempt offer covers a standard objective assessment and reports, subject to activation and its terms. Proctoring is excluded and should be discussed separately.

Should recruiters use proctoring for every hiring test?

Choose controls according to the assessment task and review needs. A supervised timed screening and an open-resource work sample may need different instructions and evidence. Agree the approach before candidates begin.
