What does assessment platform ATS integration actually mean?
An applicant tracking system (ATS) holds the recruitment pipeline. An assessment platform delivers the evaluation and its results. Integration connects agreed steps between them; it does not automatically mean that every report, score or recruiter action is available in both systems.
For example, Greenhouse’s Assessment API documentation distinguishes sending a test, checking its status and receiving a score or a link to the assessment provider’s detailed report. A report link and a full report embedded in the ATS are different deliverables. Ask which one your team will receive.
- Who selects the assessment and starts the invitation?
- Where can recruiters see invited, completed and exception states?
- Which result fields return to the application, and which require opening the assessment platform?
- Who reviews the result and decides the next hiring stage?
Do you need a native connector, an API integration or an export?
A named connector is a useful starting point, but confirm the exact ATS, account plan, supported workflow and setup requirements. A vendor saying it has an API is not evidence that your intended connector is already available.
TestGorilla’s official integration page distinguishes listed ATS connections from custom API work. HackerRank publishes a Greenhouse workflow guide covering invitations and results. These examples, checked 2 November 2026, show why buyers should ask for a specific documented workflow rather than a general integration badge. They do not establish equivalent support in AssessEngine.
| Connection approach | What to establish before buying |
|---|---|
| Supported connector | Your ATS and required workflow are documented; confirm eligibility, permissions and maintenance responsibilities. |
| Custom API connection | Both systems expose the required operations; agree the implementer, mapping, testing, ongoing ownership and quotation. |
| Automation connector or middleware | Check the actual supported actions, update timing, error visibility and any separate subscription. |
| Manual report or file transfer | Confirm the agreed output, who matches and checks records, and whether the manual effort is acceptable. Do not describe it as automatic syncing. |
What should HR put in an ATS assessment integration brief?
Write one ordinary hiring journey before requesting a demo. State the job, assessment format, approximate attempts, recruiter roles and the actions that should happen in each system. Distinguish essential requirements from conveniences.
Illustrative brief: an employer plans to screen 40 operations applicants. A recruiter should initiate the approved numerical and role-knowledge assessment after eligibility review, see which applications have completed, then open the section-level report before preparing interviews. Forty applicants is a fictional planning example, not an AssessEngine customer result.
Use the assessment-platform buyer guide to keep the integration requirement alongside question formats, reports and commercial scope.
- ATS name, account edition and the team responsible for its configuration.
- Assessment sections, scoring rules, expected attempts and test window.
- Invitation trigger: a deliberate recruiter action or an agreed stage-based rule.
- Required completion information, score fields and report access.
- Who may send invitations, read results and approve exceptions.
- Target rollout date, pilot participants and support contacts.
How do you make sure results reach the correct candidate application?
Ask the implementation owner to show how an applicant, a job application and an assessment attempt are linked. The same person can apply for two jobs or complete more than one assessment. A matching email address alone may not describe which application should receive a particular result.
Greenhouse’s documentation separately describes candidate, application and assessment-instance identifiers. Your own acceptance brief should define the equivalent relationship for the systems being evaluated. Do not assume every provider uses the same identifiers or supports the same repeat-attempt behaviour.
Request a demonstration with clearly fictional test records. Include one person applying to two roles and one authorised repeat attempt. The reviewer should be able to tell which assessment version, application and attempt produced each result. Keep real candidate data out of demonstrations unless the organisation has approved its use.
Which assessment results should appear in the ATS?
Start with the hiring manager’s decision. A single overall score may be convenient, but it can hide the section evidence needed for the next interview. Confirm the score meaning, maximum marks, assessment version and whether the displayed result is final or awaiting reviewer evaluation.
Separate assessment performance from integrity review. A proctoring flag should not silently become an automatic rejection rule just because a connection can update a pipeline stage. Agree who reviews the evidence and records the decision.
For the reviewer’s next step, see how to interpret candidate assessment results.
| Requirement | Evidence to ask for |
|---|---|
| Application and attempt context | The result belongs to the intended role, assessment version and attempt. |
| Completion status | Recruiters can distinguish complete, incomplete and failed delivery states under the agreed workflow. |
| Score meaning | A raw mark, percentage or other result is labelled accurately; required section information is accessible. |
| Report access | The intended hiring manager can open the report using their approved permissions. |
| Revised result | The team knows how a reviewed or corrected score is reflected and which record is current. |
How should recruiters test an assessment integration before launch?
Run a small approved pilot before connecting the workflow to live applicants. Use the worksheet below to agree expected behaviour, record what was actually demonstrated and assign unresolved gaps to an owner. These are buyer acceptance checks, not a statement that every platform supports each scenario.
Test failure and recovery as well as a successful completion. If a status update fails, recruiters need to know who finds the problem and reconciles the two records. Agree what happens before retrying an invitation so the candidate does not receive duplicate messages or an unintended extra attempt.
Before sending pilot invitations, review the recruiter invitation checklist for timing, device requirements and support instructions.
| Pilot scenario | What the team should verify |
|---|---|
| Normal invitation and completion | Correct assessment, recipient, application, result and report access. |
| Same person, two applications | Results remain attached to the correct role and application. |
| Invitation action repeated | The observed duplicate or retry behaviour matches the agreed rule. |
| Attempt incomplete at the deadline | Recruiters can distinguish this from a completed result. |
| Result reviewed or corrected | The final result and any required history are understandable. |
| Recruiter lacks report permission | Access is restricted and the approved route to request access is clear. |
| Connection interrupted | A named owner can identify and reconcile missing updates. |
| Connection disabled | The team understands what stops and how remaining records are handled. |
What costs and responsibilities should the quote include?
Separate assessment usage charges from any integration work. Ask whether connector access, the ATS plan, middleware, setup, changes, testing, support and ongoing maintenance are included or separately charged. An assessment’s per-attempt rate alone does not establish the total cost of an integrated workflow.
Name an owner on each side: the HR process owner, ATS administrator, assessment provider and any implementation partner. Ask who responds to missing results, changed credentials or a later platform update. Confirm support arrangements in writing rather than treating an integration logo as a service commitment.
Compare the full scope using the assessment cost-per-candidate budgeting guide; add confirmed integration charges separately.
What should you confirm about AssessEngine and your ATS?
AssessEngine’s published pricing FAQ states that standard API connections are supported and asks employers to confirm the specific ATS, workflow and integration scope with the team. That statement does not establish a ready-made connector for every ATS, automatic score syncing in your account or a quoted delivery time.
Share your brief and ask the team to confirm what is currently available, demonstrate the required operations and put any implementation work and charges in writing. Where a required connection cannot be demonstrated or confirmed, record the gap before deciding whether to proceed.
AssessEngine’s public features describe assessment questions, candidate access, section results and exports. Verify the actual output required by your hiring manager alongside the proposed connection. A general platform demonstration should not substitute for the integration pilot.
Start with the current assessment features and confirm the integration scope through the pricing enquiry.
Common questions
Can an online assessment platform integrate with our ATS?
It may, through a supported connector or an agreed API implementation. Confirm your exact ATS, account plan, invitation workflow, result fields and permissions. An API claim alone does not prove your required connection is already implemented.
Does API access mean the assessment integration is ready to use?
No. API access provides a way for systems to exchange supported information. Someone still needs to confirm the operations, implement or configure the workflow, map records, test errors and own ongoing maintenance.
Will section scores and detailed reports appear inside the ATS?
That depends on the particular connection. Some workflows return a summary or a report link. Ask the provider to demonstrate the exact result fields and report access your hiring team needs.
Can an assessment integration reject candidates automatically?
Do not assume automatic progression or rejection is included or appropriate. Agree any stage-changing rules explicitly and retain the required hiring-team review, especially for assessment exceptions and proctoring evidence.
Is an ATS integration included in the assessment price?
Confirm this in the written quotation. Connector eligibility, implementation, the ATS plan, middleware and maintenance may have separate terms. Compare the same workflow and usage across providers.
Does AssessEngine have a ready-made integration with every ATS?
This guide does not establish that. AssessEngine’s pricing page describes standard API connections and asks employers to confirm the specific ATS and required scope. Request a demonstration and written confirmation for your intended setup.
Can we use exported reports instead of an ATS connection?
If the available export and manual review process meet your requirements, that may be sufficient for your team. Confirm record matching, access and ownership; a manual transfer is not automatic integration.
