When does it make sense to look for a Mettl alternative?
Start with the reason for reviewing your assessment provider. You may want a different commercial arrangement, a simpler workflow for your recruiting team or an assessment round focused on a particular graduate role. Make that reason measurable: the HR team must be able to configure the paper, send access details and use the exported results without losing the information required for interviews.
For a management-trainee drive, the brief might emphasise numerical reasoning, written communication and role knowledge. For software graduates, executed code may be essential. For another engineering role, core-subject knowledge may be the relevant first screen. Those briefs should not be merged into a generic “campus test” simply because all candidates are graduates.
This is an AssessEngine-published, documentation-based comparison reviewed on 31 October 2026. The original pilot and procurement worksheets below are recommendations for your evaluation; they are not independent benchmark results or a claim that one vendor is universally better.
How do AssessEngine and Mercer | Mettl differ for a campus drive?
Mercer | Mettl’s official campus page describes a suite spanning campus outreach, several assessment categories and remote interviews. AssessEngine’s documented assessment workflow centres on creating tests, sharing candidate access, reviewing section scores and exporting results. Compare the specific modules your team needs rather than treating both product portfolios as identical.
The Mettl entries summarise its campus and candidate-support documentation; the AssessEngine entries use its feature and proctoring pages. Links are provided in Sources. Do not infer that a capability absent from this table is unavailable: test your must-have requirements in a demo.
| Requirement | Mercer | Mettl documentation | AssessEngine documentation |
|---|---|---|
| Graduate assessment content | Coding, technical, aptitude, language and personality evaluation tools. | Aptitude, reasoning and technical-knowledge content; own questions and custom sections. |
| Practical coding evidence | Coding assessments with technical questions and simulators. | MCQ or written technical knowledge should not be assumed to provide a code-execution environment. |
| Candidate access | Support documentation describes assessment links and invitation routes. | Public-link or username/password access with configured opening and closing times. |
| Monitoring | AI-based and human-based proctoring options are described. | Webcam snapshots, ID photos and tab-change activity for recruiter review. |
| Result workflow | Results dashboard includes section details and individual or bulk PDF report downloads. | Section scores, detailed responses and Excel export are described. |
What would a like-for-like campus assessment brief look like?
Fictional example: an employer plans 600 attempts across 12 colleges for an entry-level operations role. The proposed first round includes numerical interpretation, logical reasoning and an operations scenario. The hiring manager needs section scores and response-level evidence for follow-up interviews; live coding is outside this round’s scope.
Send the same assessment blueprint to each provider: section objectives, item counts, time limits, scoring, allowed materials and the evidence recruiters need. Ask who supplies and reviews the questions. If a vendor recommends a different assessment, record why that change improves the role evidence before changing the comparison.
A shared blueprint makes a cost or workflow comparison meaningful. It does not make two different question sets psychometrically equivalent. If calibrated scores, particular norms or specialist instruments are essential, ask for the supporting technical documentation and the assessment expert responsible for interpretation.
Is AssessEngine a cheaper alternative to Mettl for campus hiring?
AssessEngine’s published rate for a standard objective assessment is ₹80 plus GST per attempt, excluding web proctoring. For the fictional 600-attempt brief, the standard assessment component is ₹48,000 before GST and separately quoted services. New question creation, specialist formats and proctoring require their own scope.
Mercer | Mettl’s pricing page directs buyers to contact its team for pricing. This guide therefore does not assign Mettl an invented per-candidate price or claim a saving. Put the current written quote for the same brief beside the AssessEngine proposal.
| Cost component | What to record for each provider |
|---|---|
| Assessment attempts | Purchased quantity, consumption rule, validity and minimum commitment. |
| Assessment content | Included question library, own-question upload and any new content fees. |
| Proctoring | Enabled controls, live staffing if required, and related charges. |
| Drive support | Hours, escalation route, candidate assistance and campus coordination scope. |
| Changes and exceptions | Approved retries, extra volume, rescheduling and cancellation terms. |
| Final total | Taxes, payment timing and all setup or recurring charges. |
How do we trial a campus hiring assessment platform?
Run an approved internal pilot before the first college cohort. Use participants representative of the devices and access route you intend to support. Ask an HR colleague who did not configure the paper to read the report and prepare interview follow-ups from it.
- Check that the invitation and platform agree on the access window, duration and time zone.
- Complete the configured assessment and verify section scoring against the approved key.
- Export results and check that candidate identifiers and sections can be reconciled without manual guesswork.
- Review a permitted test interruption with support and record the agreed next step.
- If proctoring is required, inspect the event evidence separately from assessment scores.
- Record setup time and unresolved issues; do not generalise a small pilot into a reliability or fairness benchmark.
Can we move our existing campus assessments to another platform?
First establish which questions, branding and records your organisation is entitled to reuse. Owning a past report does not automatically give you rights to a vendor’s question bank. Prepare an inventory of your own questions, answer keys, media, section rules and desired export fields.
AssessEngine documents bulk Excel question upload and custom sections. Test your own authorised sample questions and scoring before moving a live round. Reusing a test name is not enough: negative marking, timing, randomisation and cutoff rules must be checked independently.
Keep historical reports with their original assessment version and scoring context. Do not combine old and new totals as if they share a common scale. If you change question content or test difficulty, review how shortlisting criteria should be interpreted for the new round.
When should we shortlist AssessEngine, and when should we examine a broader suite?
Shortlist AssessEngine for a walkthrough when your brief centres on configurable objective assessments, role-knowledge questions, candidate access and reports that recruiters review. Use the campus assessment page and sample report to prepare specific questions for the team.
Examine Mercer | Mettl’s relevant modules when the same procurement requires its documented coding simulators, spoken-language evaluation, campus intelligence or interview tools. Confirm which modules are included and how your team will use them. If practical code execution is essential, do not substitute a technical MCQ round just to match a lower quoted assessment price.
The next step is a pilot against a written brief, not a blanket switch. Download the campus comparison brief below to capture requirements, observed evidence, costs and the owner who approves the launch.
Common questions
Is AssessEngine a Mettl alternative for campus hiring in India?
It is an option to evaluate for campus assessment rounds using aptitude, reasoning, technical knowledge, configurable questions and recruiter reports. Match the required format and workflow first; this guide does not establish feature-for-feature equivalence with the complete Mettl suite.
Can we compare Mettl and AssessEngine by cost per candidate?
Yes, when the quotes cover the same assessment, content, proctoring, support, volume and billing rules. AssessEngine’s ₹80 plus GST standard objective rate excludes proctoring; do not compare it with a broader bundle as if both include the same services.
Does AssessEngine replace a coding simulator for engineering campus hiring?
A technical-knowledge or written assessment does not establish that candidates can execute working code. If a coding simulator is essential, verify that exact environment rather than assuming an MCQ assessment replaces it.
Can we upload our existing campus questions?
AssessEngine documents bulk Excel upload and custom sections. Use questions your organisation is entitled to reuse and verify their media, answer keys, timing and scoring in a pilot.
Can our team test the standard assessment before buying?
AssessEngine accepts requests for a one-time 10-attempt standard objective evaluation with reports, subject to activation and the published terms. Proctoring and specialist formats are excluded; confirm any additional pilot scope separately.
What is the most useful document to send an assessment vendor?
Send a role-specific brief covering sections, content ownership, expected attempts, peak participation, timing, candidate devices, monitoring, reports and support. Ask for the demo and quote against that same brief.
